Lookman Makes History in Madrid Derby with First LaLiga Goal

Ademola Lookman etched his name into Atlético Madrid’s history books by becoming the eighth player in the 21st century to score in his first La Liga derby against Real Madrid, and the first since Luciano Vietto in October 2015.
The Nigerian forward’s close-range finish, set up by Giuliano Simeone’s clever backheel, gave Atlético a shock lead at the Bernabéu. It was Lookman’s first goal in six La Liga appearances and lifted his tally to four in 13 matches across all competitions since joining from Atalanta in January.
His strike also carried wider significance: Lookman became the first Nigerian to score against Real Madrid in La Liga since Samuel Chukwueze netted a brace for Villarreal in their 3-2 win in August 2023.
