Lookman Thrives Under Simeone’s Demands, Eyes Silverware After Stunning Start in Spain

Atlético Madrid forward Ademola Lookman has hailed manager Diego Simeone’s intensity and the support of teammates as the driving forces behind his impressive start to life in La Liga.

Speaking at a LALIGA media roundtable, the Nigerian international reflected on his journey, adaptation, and ambitions as Atlético chase silverware on multiple fronts.

Lookman, who has registered five goals and four assists in his first 14 appearances, praised Simeone’s demanding approach.

‘He’s very intense and very demanding, which is always good to have a manager like this, because you want to push as much as you can every single day,’ he said.

Simeone had earlier emphasized the need for Lookman to adapt defensively, a challenge the forward embraced.

‘Learning that side of the game is something I’ve always been open to… it builds me up overall as a player,’ Lookman explained.

Settling quickly in Spain, Lookman credited former Atalanta teammates Juan Musso and Matteo Ruggeri for easing his transition, alongside the wider squad and staff.

‘Coming into a new environment is never easy, but the group here have been amazing. It’s a massive club and it’s right in your face when you’re here,’ he noted.

His impact was most evident in the Copa del Rey semi-final against Barcelona, where he scored and assisted in Atlético’s 4-0 first-leg victory. Despite a 3-0 defeat in the return leg, Atlético advanced 4-3 on aggregate.

Looking ahead to a Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad and a Champions League quarter-final clash with Barcelona, Lookman stressed the importance of consistency.

‘Recovery, eating right, sleeping right. Control what you control. Control your controllables and be at your best.’
