Madugu Explains Oshoala’s Omission, Eyes WAFCON Glory

Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has shed light on his decision to leave Asisat Oshoala out of Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming double-header friendlies against Cameroon.

The omission of the 31-year-old forward, who has been in fine form for Saudi club Al-Hilal, raised eyebrows when Madugu unveiled his 25-player list last week.

Madugu, according to Complete Sports, explained that the choice was not a reflection of Oshoala’s importance to the team but rather an opportunity to test other players.

‘It’s a friendly match, and it’s important we give others the chance to show what they can do. We all know what Asisat brings to the team, but these games allow us to explore new options. She remains very much part of our plans,’ he was quoted as saying by Complete Sports.

The Super Falcons are preparing to defend their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations crown in Morocco next month, where they will chase a record-extending 11th title.

Drawn in Group C alongside Malawi, Zambia, and Egypt, Madugu acknowledged the growing competitiveness of women’s football across Africa. He noted that with the tournament expanded to 16 teams, retaining the trophy will be tougher than ever.

Madugu emphasized that the team’s first objective is to reach the semi-finals, which would secure qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

From there, the focus will shift to reaching the final and ultimately defending the WAFCON title.

‘Retaining a trophy is always more difficult than winning it the first time,’ he admitted, but expressed confidence that the Falcons are preparing diligently to meet the challenge.
