Stanley Nwabali emerged as Nigeria’s hero in Casablanca, producing two crucial saves in the penalty shootout to secure the Super Eagles’ ninth Africa Cup of Nations bronze medal with a 4–2 victory over Egypt after a tense goalless 90 minutes.

‘It was a very difficult match against a great Egyptian team,’ Nwabali reflected after being named Man of the Match.

‘Both sides were solid and no one wanted to make a mistake. During the penalty shootout, I stayed calm, tried to read the takers and trust my instinct.

‘Thankfully, it worked for us. This victory is the result of collective effort. The defenders were incredible, and the entire team stayed united until the very end.’

The third‑place playoff was a cagey affair, with few clear chances. Egypt threatened through Mohamed Salah, who twice tested Nwabali at the near post, while Mahmoud Trezeguet was denied by the goalkeeper rushing off his line.

Nigeria thought they had broken the deadlock before half‑time when Akor Adams headed home, but VAR ruled out the goal for a foul in the build‑up.

With the game still goalless after regulation time, penalties decided the contest.

Nigeria’s shootout began poorly as Fisayo Dele‑Bashiru saw his effort saved by Ouba Shobeir, but Nwabali turned the tide with back‑to‑back stops from Salah and Omar Marmoush.

Calm finishes from Adams, Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi and Ademola Lookman sealed the victory, ensuring Eric Chelle’s side ended the tournament on a high after their semi‑final disappointment against hosts Morocco.
