Manchester United Equal 21-Year Premier League Record in Bournemouth Draw
Manchester United equaled an unwanted Premier League record in their 2-2 draw with Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Friday night, becoming the first team in 21 years to surrender leads in both home and away fixtures against the same opponent in a single season without winning either match.
The Red Devils had already squandered three winning positions in December’s dramatic 4-4 clash at Old Trafford, and Friday night brought a repeat of frustrations.
Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 61st minute, but Ryan Christie quickly leveled for Bournemouth. A James Hill own goal restored United’s advantage, only for Harry Maguire to concede a penalty and be sent off, allowing Junior Kroupi to equalize once more.
The result means United have matched Crystal Palace’s unwanted feat from the 2004/05 campaign, when the Eagles twice let slip leads against Southampton to draw 2-2 in both meetings.
Adding to United’s woes, the draw extended their poor record against Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola.
The Spaniard has now gone eight games unbeaten against United, dating back to his time as Athletic Bilbao captain when Marcelo Bielsa’s side eliminated the Red Devils from the Europa League in 2011/12.
Since taking charge at Bournemouth, Iraola has overseen two wins and four draws against United, with both victories coming by 3-0 scorelines at Old Trafford.
