Manchester United set unwanted Community Shield record in penalty shootout loss to Manchester City

The most successful club in the Community Shield, Manchester United with 21 wins, have now become the first club to reach double figures of defeat in the competition after losing 7-6 on penalties to city rivals, Man City on Saturday at Wembley stadium.

The Red Devils have now been runners-up 10 times in the competition, more often than any other side in the competition’s history.

Prior to the game, both teams were on nine defeats each with Man United losing nine of the 30 finals they have been involved in while Man City have also lost nine of 15 finals.

Man City were predicted to win the trophy by supercomputer who gave the Citizens’ 61.3% of pre-match simulations.

But it was Man United that took the lead after a goalless first half, when Alejandro Garnacho thought he had given Ten Hag’s side back-to-back Wembley victories with just nine minutes left to play following their FA Cup final success in the same stadium back in May, but Pep Guardiola’s side eventually prevailed.

Bernardo Silva’s close-range header in the 89th minute cancelled out Garnacho’s opener which forced the showpiece to spot-kicks.

Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland, Savinho, Ederson, Matheus Nunes, Ruben Dias and Manuel Akanji made no mistake from the spot while Ederson, Man City goalkeeper saved Jadon Sancho’s effort before Jonny Evans missed the target and condemned the Red Devils’ to their 10th defeat.
