Mbappe surpasses Ronaldo and Maradona, matches Messi in World Cup goals

Kylian Mbappe scored a brace in France’s 3-1 win over Poland in the Round of 16 to reach nine goals in two World Cup appearances, a feat Cristiano Ronaldo will be

targetting when Portugal plays Switzerland on Tuesday and which Diego Maradona will never achieve.

The 23-year-old has found the back of the net five times in the current campaign and he scored four in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, bringing his total so far to nine.

Only Argentina captain, Lionel Messi has that amount of goals in the history of the tournament but has played in more World Cups.

Aside Ronaldo and Maradona, Mbappe has also surpassed Luis Suárez, Neymar, Thierry Henry, Rivaldo, Kempes, and a few more.

The trio of Mbappe, Messi and Ronaldo are still in the competition and the table can still be turned against the rampaging Frenchman who says he has prepared mentally

and physically for the ongoing World Cup.

‘This is the competition of my dreams, and I am delighted to be here,’ said Mbappe after Sunday’s match.

‘I have prepared all season to be ready. When I didn’t speak to the media in the early rounds of this competition, it was because I just needed to focus on the

tournament and my football. When I want to concentrate, that’s how I function, but when I was told the French Federation would be fined, I paid it myself because it

was my responsibility.

‘But I am here and focused on winning the World Cup again. We’re a long way from achieving our objective of going all the way and winning the World Cup, though. The

first challenge is the quarterfinal, and that’s what we are focusing on now.’

Next up for Mbappe is England in the quarterfinal.
