Mondays sit-at-home forces AFN to shift Southeast zonal election to Tuesday
The election to select the representative of the Southeast on the board of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, will no longer hold on Monday, June 1, 2025, as scheduled by the AFN Electoral Committee.
The shift in the poll, according to a few of the contestants was necessitated by Mondays sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in August 2021 to demand the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, from prison.
The elections timeline issued by the AFN Electoral scheduled all zonal elections in the southern part of Nigeria to hold on Monday, June 2, 2025 while the northern part will hold theirs on Tuesday June 3, 2025.
‘We have all agreed with the zonal coordinator that our election will hold on Tuesday June 3 because of the sit-at-home in our zone,’ said one of the aspirants who preferred not to be named.
Sportsnow.com.ng was informed that there are three aspirants for the position of the zonal representative.
Incumbent Victor Okorie is trying to secure a second term despite damaging documents circulating around about his character. Others are a former board member, Patrick Estate from Anambra state and Innocent Iheme, a former Nigeria international who, together with his wife, have guided their son, Divine Iheme who set a UK under-14 record of 10.56 for the 100m at the England Athletics U15 and U17 Open Championships in July 2024.
