NDDC Upgrades Edo State Facilities Ahead of 2nd Niger Delta Games
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has completed major upgrades to sporting facilities in Benin City ahead of the 2nd Niger Delta Games, bringing Edo State into the spotlight as host of the regional competition.
Just as Akwa Ibom benefitted before the inaugural edition, Edo is now reaping the rewards of the Commission’s intervention policy, which promises to leave lasting legacies in host states.
At the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, extensive rehabilitation is underway on the Olympic-standard swimming pool, measuring 50 meters long and 20 feet deep, alongside improvements to the tennis courts beside the main arena.
During the unveiling of Edo as host on December 4, NDDC Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku assured Governor Monday Okpebholo that the facilities would be upgraded to meet international standards.
That commitment was reaffirmed by Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, Chairman of Dunamis-Icon Limited, organisers of the Games, during a recent inspection tour.
He noted that assessments had been carried out and that deteriorated facilities would undergo major transformation in the coming weeks, describing the upgrades as a legacy the Games bring to host states.
Other facilities receiving attention include the twin volleyball and basketball courts at the Wire Road Sports Centre, which have now been fitted with dressing rooms and conveniences.
With Edo joining Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Imo, Ondo, and Rivers as part of the nine-member regional bloc, the Games are set to attract over 3,000 athletes and 500 coaches competing across 16 sports disciplines. The event will run from February 20 to 27, positioning Edo as a hub of sporting excellence and regional unity.
