Ndidi equals Mikel, Yobo, Iwobi, Etuhu unwanted Premier League record

Wilfred Ndidi ruined an above average performance for Leicester City on Tuesday night when he gifted Aston Villa a late goal that proved the winner in the Foxes’ 2-1 loss at the King Power stadium in a Premier League matchweek 29 fixture.

The Nigerian made his third straight start for the home side who needed a win to get themselves out of the relegation zone but after coming back from a 24th minute setback via a Harvey Barnes’ 35th minute equalizer, Ndidi’s error on 87 minute ensured the Foxes sink deeper into relegation.

Leicester City newspaper, the Leicester Mercury felt sorry for the Nigerian and gave him five out of a possible 10 in its rating of the midfielder.

‘A disastrous moment for the Villa moment marred what was actually a very good performance. There seemed to be a greater aggression in his tackles, and he carried the ball up the pitch too, even if he was untidy in his forward passes. Then, he made a very costly error to undo his previous good work,’ wrote the newspaper about the Nigerian’s performance.

The error, Ndidi’s second after gifting Mason Mount a seventh minute goal in Leicester City’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford in August 2019, has drawn the former KRC of Belgium star level with Nigerian players in the league who have committed errors leading to goals.

Prior to Tuesday night’s game, only five Nigerians viz Dickson Etuhu, Alex Iwobi, Mikel Obi and Joseph Yobo have committed more than an erro that led to their respective clubs conceeding goals.

Meanwhile, Ndidi’s compatriot at the club, Kelechi Iheanacho was left on the bench throught for the seventh time this season and 72nd time since he made his Premier League debut in August 2015.
