Ndidi: Why NFF Should Retain Chelle as Super Eagles Coach

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has called on the Nigeria Football Federation to retain Éric Chelle as head coach of the national team, despite the Malian’s failure to meet the target set for him at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Chelle was mandated to guide Nigeria to the final of the competition but saw his side fall short, losing 4–2 on penalties to hosts Morocco in the semi‑final.

Ndidi, speaking in Casablanca ahead of Nigeria’s third‑place playoff, stressed that continuity is crucial for the team’s progress.

‘I want us to keep the coach. We should be focused on continuity at this point,’ the Besiktas midfielder said.

The Super Eagles skipper praised Chelle’s demanding approach, noting that his influence extends beyond the pitch.

‘He is so demanding. I’ve never seen a coach as demanding; not just on the field but off it, even down to how we eat,’ Ndidi remarked. ‘He’s a nice guy and connects with his players, but when it’s time for the job, he doesn’t joke.’

Chelle, 48, has earned respect within the squad for his ability to balance discipline with personal connection.
