NFRA Announces Maiden Sani Zubairu Memorial Soccer Championship

The Nigeria Football Referees’ Association (NFRA) has officially inaugurated the Organising Committee for the maiden edition of the Late Hon. Sani Zubairu Memorial Soccer Championship, a competition designed to honour the legacy of the late NFRA President, Hon. Sani Zubairu, who passed away while in office.

Under the leadership of Acting President, Sir Kelechi Mejuobi, the Association has resolved to immortalize Zubairu’s contributions to football and refereeing by bringing together all State Councils, including the Federal Capital Territory, in a unifying football tournament.

The memorial competition aims to celebrate the life and service of Hon. Zubairu while fostering unity, sportsmanship, and physical fitness among referees nationwide.

It will also serve as a platform to promote awareness of his immense contributions to the growth of football refereeing in Nigeria.

The committee has been tasked with ensuring high standards of organization and administration, encouraging participation from every council, and implementing measures to guarantee safety and fairness throughout the competition.

Sponsorship drives will also be undertaken to support the successful execution of the event.

The Organising Committee is chaired by Alhaji Ibrahim Zailani, with Toki Abdulfatai Kolapo as Vice Chairman and Dima Charles Denis as Director of Organisation.

Other members include Ali Mellah Alhaji (Media Officer), Ms. Nkeiru Amoke, Akinfemisoye Tolupe, Alhaji Umar Mohammed, Patrick Ishaya, Paul Umago, Peter Bwamba, Dr. Nasiru Suleiman, and Uche Nwaegbe (Secretary).

The committee has been given five weeks to submit its operational framework and recommendations to the NFRA National Executive Council (NEC) for consideration.

In a statement signed by Chukwudi Ejimofor, National Publicity Secretary (NPS of the NFRA, the Association expressed gratitude to the appointed members for accepting the responsibility and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the championship reflects the values of unity, recreation, and excellence in refereeing.
