Nicky Butt Endorses Mourinho for Man United Return
Nicky Butt has thrown his support behind Jose Mourinho for a sensational return to Manchester United, insisting the Portuguese coach still has the qualities to lead the club despite the turbulent end to his previous spell.
The former United midfielder believes Mourinho’s winning mentality and track record of delivering trophies would make him a strong candidate to take charge at Old Trafford once again.
Mourinho guided United to Europa League and League Cup success between 2016 and 2018 before departing on difficult terms. Butt, however, says he would welcome him back, stressing that the club needs a proven leader.
‘He’s a winner and can carry that football club, but the powers that be would never allow it, as they now prefer a manager who focuses solely on coaching rather than controlling recruitment,’ Butt told Paddy Power.
He added that United’s current structure makes it difficult for established managers to thrive, as they would demand guarantees on budget, time, and control. In his view, the club may instead lean towards someone like Michael Carrick, who fits the modern coaching model.
