Nigeria and India submit formal bids to host 2030 Commonwealth Games
Commonwealth Sport has officially confirmed that India and Nigeria have submitted formal proposals to host the landmark centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030.
The submissions, received by the August 31 deadline, follow an unprecedented wave of global interest in hosting future editions of the Games.
Dr. Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, welcomed the development.
‘We are thrilled to announce that India and Nigeria, two of the Commonwealth’s most dynamic sporting nations, have entered formal bids to host the 2030 Games.
‘Their proposals reflect the enduring relevance of the Commonwealth Games and the growing appeal of our reimagined, sustainable hosting model,’ he said.
Dr. Rukare expressed gratitude to the Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs) of both countries and their respective governments for their proactive engagement throughout the collaborative dialogue phase.
He noted that the national sports policies presented by both nations demonstrate a clear commitment to leveraging the Games to advance national development goals and deliver lasting benefits to local communities.
Katie Sadleir CNZM, CEO of Commonwealth Sport also spoke on the bids.
‘Over the past year, we’ve made significant strides, securing Glasgow as host for the 2026 Commonwealth Games and announcing Malta as the venue for the 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games.
‘Today’s announcement reinforces the Games’ status as a cornerstone of the global sporting calendar and signals continued momentum toward inclusive and innovative hosting.’
The proposals from India and Nigeria will now undergo a rigorous review by the 2030 Evaluation Commission, appointed by the Commonwealth Sport Executive Board.
Candidate Hosts will present their bids in person at a meeting scheduled for late September in London.
Following this, the Commission will submit its findings to the Executive Board, which will recommend a preferred host to the 74 member nations and territories of the Commonwealth Sport Movement.
The final decision will be made at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in November 2025, to be held in Glasgow, Scotland.
