Nigeria Mourns the Passing of Football Legend Peter Rufai

Nigeria is in mourning following the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai, fondly known as Dodo Mayana, at the age of 61.

A hero of Nigeria’s golden football era, Rufai was instrumental in Nigeria’s 1994 AFCON victory and represented the nation at two FIFA World Cups. His career spanned top European clubs and, after retirement, he devoted himself to mentoring young talents.

‘Rufai was a true icon—a role model whose passion and humility inspired millions,’ said Comrade Philip Shaibu, DG of the NIS.

‘Nigeria mourns, but heaven welcomes a legend,’ added NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko.

Both the National Institute for Sports and the National Sports Commission paid glowing tributes to his legacy, calling him a symbol of resilience, leadership, and excellence in Nigerian sport.
