Nigeria Pitch Awards applauds Super Falcons’ historic 10th WAFCON victory
The Nigeria Pitch Awards has congratulated the Super Falcons following their remarkable triumph at the 2025 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The Nigerian team lifted their 10th WAFCON title after a dramatic come-from-behind win against Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses on Saturday, 26 July 2025.
In a statement from Abuja, Dr. Shina Philips, President of the Nigeria Pitch Awards, hailed the Super Falcons for their resilience and fierce determination. “Our girls exemplified the never-say-never Nigerian spirit. Their victory, especially after going two goals down in the first 25 minutes of the final, should inspire every Nigerian facing adversity,” he said.
Dr. Philips also extended congratulations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian people, emphasizing the national importance of this landmark achievement. He commended the collaborative efforts of the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Football Federation, which he described as crucial to the success of Nigerian football.
‘We believe the recent WAFCON victory will propel other national teams to greater heights in continental and global tournaments,’ Philips added.
He expressed optimism for the future, declaring, ‘We continue to believe the Super Eagles will one day bring home the World Cup.’
Philips also celebrated individual achievements within the team, specifically praising Rasheedat Ajibade and Chiamaka Nnadozie—both nominees for the Queen of the Pitch Award. Ajibade went on to win the prestigious title.
The Super Falcons remain the most decorated team in WAFCON history, with ten titles to their name. Their 2025 campaign was flawless, with six unbeaten matches and a total of 14 goals scored. They previously dominated early editions of the tournament, winning consecutively from 1998 to 2006, and adding more titles in 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2024.
The Nigeria Pitch Awards, launched in Calabar in 2013, honors excellence in football through a transparent voting process involving over 100 sports editors nationwide. The 12th edition of the ceremony is set for December 2025.
