Nigeria set to Shine at inaugural African School Games in Algeria
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed that Nigeria will participate in the maiden edition of the African School Games, taking place from July 26 to August 5, 2025, in Algeria.
Organized by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), the groundbreaking event marks a turning point in youth sports development across the continent.
‘This is a remarkable opportunity to showcase and nurture Nigeria’s school-age talents on the continental stage,’ said NSC Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade. ‘We’re working hand-in-hand with the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), schools, and parents to ensure Team Nigeria is well-prepared.’
Team Nigeria will compete across 10 sporting disciplines: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Canoeing, Football, Swimming, Table Tennis, Cycling and Taekwondo.
Arrival of delegates and opening of the Games Village is scheduled for July 23, 2025.
Hon. Olopade also emphasized Nigeria’s evolving sports mandate under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu:
‘This is a breath of fresh air for the NSC. Our youth are benefiting from the sports economy we’re building, and we’re giving equal attention to all sports. In under a year, 21 federations have represented Nigeria abroad. We’re engaging youth, energizing the sports economy, and shaping a new athletic future.’
All participating athletes must present a valid school certificate and, for minors, parental authorization forms will be coordinated by the NSC and NOC.
The African School Games is a first-of-its-kind event dedicated to African schoolchildren—aimed at uncovering young talent, fostering grassroots development, and advancing the Olympic values of excellence, solidarity, and friendship.
