‘Nigerian’ Arike Ogunbowale leads WNBA All-Stars to 117-109 win over US Olympic team
Nigeria-born Arike Ogunbowale was the star of the show Saturday night after she set the All-Star scoring record with 34 points in WNBA team’s 117-109 defeat of the U.S. Olympic team.
According to agency report, the win was the second consecutive win for the WNBA All-Star team over the Olympians as they also won in 2021 led by Ogunbowale, who was MVP of both that game and this one.
Youngest of three children,Ogunbowale, was born to Nigerian parents, Yolanda Ogunbowale and Gregory Ogunbowale in Milwaukee.
According to agency reports, the 2021 All-Star MVP took over the game in the third quarter scoring 21 points, hitting six of her 10 shots, including five 3-pointers. The U.S. team threw everything at the Dallas Wings star, but they just couldn’t stop her.
Interestingly, the ‘Nigerian’ has been in the U.S. national team pool for the past two Olympics, but didn’t make the roster either time.
According to agency report, the 27 year old pulled her name out of the pool of players early this time around saying the whole process was political.
She is also not in the Nigerian team, D’Tigress roster for the Paris 2024 Olympics albeit Sportsnow.com.ng could not confirm if Nigeria made any move for her to switch her allegiance.
