Nigeria’s leading goal scorers of all time: Osimhen seeking to move past Odegbami into second

Victor Osimhen will be looking to become Nigeria’s second highest goal scorer of all time if he plays and scores in Super Eagles’ two Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Republic of Benin and Rwanda.

The Super Eagles will face the Cheetahs of Republic of Benin at the Godswill Akpabio stadium in Uyo on Saturday before travelling to Kigali to face the Amavubi of Rwanda at the Amahoro stadium on Tuesday.

The Galatasaray forward has netted 21 goals in 35 appearances for Nigeria and two goals for him will tie him with Segun Odegbami as the second most prolific Nigerian ever behind ‘goals father’, Rashidi Yekini who scored 37 times for the Super Eagles.

Osimhen needs three goals to move above Odegbami and the 25-year-old will feel confident he can achieve it especially in a competition (AFCON qualifiers) in which he has netted 15 goals in 12 games.

Meanwhile, FC Nantes of France winger, Moses Simon will be aiming to become the 17th Nigerian to hit double figure of goals for Nigeria.

Simon, voted his club’s player of the year for August, has netted nine times for the Super Eagles and will hope to score against either Benin or Rwanda or both to join the exclusive club.

Team captain, William Toost-Ekong is Nigeria’s highest top scoring defender of all time with seven goals and the Saudi Arabia-based player will be eager to hit 10 goals or more if he retires from the senior national team and he can as well want to start in Uyo against the Cheetahs of Republic of Benin.
