Nigeria’s WAFCON Glory Not Enough for FIFA Boost as Super Falcons Remain 36th Best in Latest Ranking
Despite clinching a historic 10th title at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), the Super Falcons of Nigeria remain 36th in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking released on August 7, 2025.
Their continental dominance is undisputed, but globally, the team has yet to break into the top 30.
Nigeria continues to lead Africa’s women’s football rankings, followed by South Africa (54th), Morocco (64th), Zambia (65th), Cameroon (66th), and Ghana (67th).
Côte d’Ivoire climbed one spot to 71st, while Mali (79th) and Algeria (80th) round out the top 10, with Senegal just outside at 11th in Africa.
Globally, Spain reclaimed the No. 1 spot after a dominant run to the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 final, overtaking the USA, who now sit second. France surged four places to sixth after a strong group-stage performance, while Brazil slipped to seventh despite winning the Copa América Femenina.
The rankings reflect a dynamic shift in global women’s football, but Nigeria’s consistent continental success raises questions about the gap between African and global competition.
