Nigeria’s World Championships Facts: Ese Brume Eyes Historic Medal Haul

Long jumper Ese Brume is poised to make history as she prepares for her fifth appearance at the World Athletics Championships, set to take place in Japan later this week. Her goal: to surpass Blessing Okagbare and become the most decorated Nigerian athlete in the history of the prestigious event.

Okagbare remains the only Nigerian to have won two medals at a single edition of the Championships after claiming bronze in the 200m and silver in the long jump at the 2013 event in Moscow, Russia.

While that unique feat is likely to remain untouched, Brume has the opportunity to break their shared record for the most overall medals won by a Nigerian.

Brume earned a bronze medal in 2019 and followed it up with a silver in 2022, making her the first Nigerian to win two medals in the same event at the World Championships. These achievements also brought her level with Okagbare’s total medal count.

Now at 29, Brume could extend her tally to three medals in the long jump, thereby solidifying her status as the Nigerian with the highest number of medals in Championships history.

Such a feat would also mean the long jump would extend its record as Nigeria’s most successful event at the World Championships.

Since Okagbare’s trailblazing long jump medal in 2013, Nigeria has added two more medals in the discipline, all thanks to Brume’s consistency and excellence.

Meanwhile, sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan is also on the brink of history. She has the chance to match Brume’s record of winning at least two medals in the same at the Championships.

However, due to the absence of Nigeria women’s 4x100m relay team, Amusan will miss the opportunity to emulate Okagbare’s rare achievement of winning two medals in a single edition of the Championships.
