No cause for alarm: Broos confident South Africa will clinch World Cup ticket ahead of Rwanda clash

Despite a frustrating goalless draw against Zimbabwe in Durban, Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos remains upbeat about South Africa’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The stalemate at Moses Mabhida Stadium saw South Africa dominate possession and create multiple scoring opportunities, only to be denied by goal-line clearances and the woodwork.

The result leaves Bafana second in Group C, two points behind leaders Benin, with one match remaining.

Broos acknowledged the disappointment but emphasized belief and focus ahead of Tuesday’s decisive clash against Rwanda in Mbombela.

‘It’s not over yet. If we win against Rwanda, we’ll see what happens. That’s the most important thing. It won’t be easy, but as long as it’s possible, you have to believe,’ Broos said.

South Africa’s fate also hinges on Nigeria defeating Benin in Uyo on the same day. Broos admitted the outcome of that match could be pivotal but insisted his team must concentrate on their own performance.

‘We’ll be a little bit down for one or two days. But I’ll make sure the team is ready to fight again on Tuesday, and score as many goals as possible, because goal difference could decide everything,’ he added.

The match in Durban ended with both sides reduced to ten men, following red cards for Zimbabwe’s Knowledge Musona and Bafana defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi.

Bafana Bafana will travel to Mbombela on Saturday to begin preparations for their final group fixture, a must win encounter that could seal their ticket to the World Cup.
