No Doha return for Amusan as 2023 Diamond League train set to begin 14-leg journey

Reigning World 100m hurdles champion and record holder (12.12) Tobi Amusan will not be be starting her Diamond League season in Doha, Qatar.

The 26 year old is not one of the seven athletes confirmed by organizers of the race for the opening leg of the elite, money-spinning one day event.

Amusan began her historic 2022 season in Doha, running a wind-aided 12.44 to place second behind then reigning World record holder, Kendra Harrison of the USA who also ran a wind-aided 12.43 to win.

The Nigerian never looked back from there as she won in all the major Championships and Games she competed in with her historic world title win in Oregon the icing on her historic cake.

Amusan has competed just twice in Doha in the competition, coming second on both occasions. She was second behind Jamaica’s Danielle Williams in 2019 and second three years later behind Harrison.

Doha was also the venue where she first served notice of what was to come when, despite running 12.4 twice in the heat and semifinals, she missed making the podium by the narrowest of margins.

She came in fourth in 12.49, two hundreth of a second behind Danielle Williams (12.47) who won the race in the final returning mother, Nia Ali won in 12.34.

Amusan is the defending 100m hurdles Diamond League winner after she successfully defended her Diamond League trophy last year in Zurich.

The petite Nigerian will seeking to become the second woman after USA’s Dawn Harper Nelson to win the trophy three consecutive times.
