NPFL denies knife attack, penalizes Katsina United over stadium violence
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has issued an official clarification regarding the incident that occurred during the Matchday 12 fixture between Katsina United and Barau FC at the Muhammad Dikko Stadium in Katsina.
Contrary to widespread reports suggesting that Barau FC player Abraham Nana was attacked with a knife and had his throat slit, the NPFL has firmly denied such claims, describing them as ‘utterly false.’
According to the league’s statement, Nana sustained an injury after being struck by an object thrown from the stands.
The match was temporarily halted to allow for on-pitch medical attention, after which play resumed. The NPFL emphasized that its Situation Room was actively monitoring the match in real time through its network of Match Commissioners, ensuring accurate oversight and swift response.
The league confirmed that it remained in constant communication with the Match Commissioner and officials from both teams throughout the incident.
Following a thorough review of reports from the Referee and Match Commissioner, the NPFL imposed appropriate sanctions on Katsina United for breaches of conduct during the game.
Reaffirming its commitment to safety and fair competition, the NPFL assured fans and stakeholders that robust control measures are in place to maintain a secure environment at all league matches.
