NPFL Orders Minute’s Silence for Late Henry Nwosu
The Nigeria Premier Football League has ordered that a minute’s silence be observed across all Matchday 30 fixtures this weekend in honour of former Green Eagles captain Henry Nwosu, who passed away at the age of 62.
League chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye confirmed the directive in a statement on Saturday, describing Nwosu’s death as both a personal loss and a painful moment for Nigerian football.
Nwosu, who was the youngest member of Nigeria’s squad that won the 1980 African Cup of Nations, died in the early hours of Saturday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital after a brief illness.
He had reportedly been receiving intensive care for several days before his passing.
Elegbeleye reflected on his long-standing relationship with the late midfielder, noting that Nwosu had remained supportive of him throughout his career, including during his nomination for the Pitch Football Awards.
He praised Nwosu’s legacy as a player and coach, stressing that his contributions to both the national team and domestic football made him a true ambassador of the sport.
The NPFL chairman added that while death is ultimately a submission to the will of God, the league mourns the loss of a major figure in Nigerian football. He offered prayers for the repose of Nwosu’s soul and urged strength for his family as they grieve.
