NPFL: Rivers United Slip in Title Race Yet Stay Ahead

Rivers United’s title charge suffered a setback as Qamar Adegoke struck deep into stoppage time to hand Shooting Stars a dramatic 2-1 victory in their rescheduled matchday 24 clash at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan.

The hosts took the lead in the first half when Sodiq Ibrahim finished smartly in the 33rd minute. Rivers United responded strongly after the break, with Wasiu Falolu converting from an Ochobi Elias assist to level the score.

Both sides created chances in a thrilling end-to-end contest, but goalkeepers Osagie Onisodumeya and Godgift Elkamah produced a string of fine saves to keep the game balanced.

Just when it seemed the points would be shared, Adegoke found the net in the final action of the match to seal victory for Shooting Stars.

The forward has now scored three times in his last four appearances, taking his tally for the season to seven.

For Rivers United, the defeat was only their fourth of the campaign, though they remain two points clear at the top of the table.

Attention now turns to Monday’s fixture, when Rivers United travel to Lagos to face Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, as they look to bounce back and strengthen their grip on the title race.

Shooting Stars who moved up to sixth with 44 points are on the road to Lafia to face Nasarawa United.
