NPFL Title Race: Rangers, Enyimba stumble as Remo Stars cut gap at the top to two points with two games to go

Rangers international of Enugu and Enyimba of Aba both stumbled in the NPFL title race as Remo Stars cut the Flying Antelopes lead at the top of the table to two points with two games to go.

League leaders Rangers lost 1-0 to old rivals, Shooting Stars at the Lekan Salami stadium in Adamasingba in Ibadan in their matchweek 36 clash.

A 13th minute strike by Dumte Christian Pyagbara means Rangers will now have to win their last two games vs Bendel Insurance (at home) and relegated Gombe United (away) to be crowned champions.

At the Enyimba international stadium in Aba, the Peoples’ Elephant could only hold on to Alade Balogun’s 20th minute goal for 15 minutes before conceding the equalizer to visiting Bayelsa United.

Ekeson Okorie scored the equalizer which moves Bayelsa United to 16th on the log and will need to beat Shooting Stars on Sunday to be in a very strong position to secure their safety.

Meanwhile, the result still keeps Enyimba in the title race courtesy of Rangers’ loss in Ibadan but the Flying Antelopes will put paid to Enyimba’s ambition of successfully defending their crown if they beat Bendel Insurance this weekend in Enugu.

Remo Stars however put themselves in a strong position to challenge Rangers for the title after hammering relegated Heartland of Owerri 4-1 in Ikenne.

The Kunle Soname men will be hoping for a slip by Rangers in their last two games to emerge champions.

Rangers still lead the table with 64 points from 36 games with Remo Stars second with 62 points while Enyimba are third with 60 points.

With a healthy plus 20 goal difference, Rangers could be needing just four points from their final two games to be crowned champions. What looks certain is that the winner won’t be decided until the final game of the season.
