NPFL Update: Amuneke and Heartland relegated!

For the second season in a row, Heartland football club of Owerri have been relegated from the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL despite defeating Akwa United 2-1 at the Dan Anyiam stadium in Owerri on Sunday.

Led by former Nigeria international winger, Emmanuel Amuneke after the Naze Millionaires were able to stay in the NPFL by buying the slot of Beyond Limit FC who could not compete in the division despite their promotion from the Nigeria National League at the end of last season due to regulatory reasons.

Amuneke could not help the club stay afloat as they finished 16th on the log with 48 points, just one shy of El Kanemi Warriors who won 1-0 against Sunshine Stars to keep their place in the Nigerian topflight.

It was always going to be difficult for Amuneke to lead Heartland to safety in the final round of games as the Owerri-based side’s destiny was clearly not in their hands. The Naze Millionaires however did their part by beating the visitors from Akwa Ibom who were also relegated on the day.
