NPFL Update: Rivers United Back on Top After Enugu Rangers Fall in Ibadan
Rivers United reclaimed top spot in the Nigeria Premier Football League on Sunday after a thrilling 4-2 victory over relegation-threatened Kun Khalifat at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
Finidi George’s men moved one point clear of Enugu Rangers, who stumbled to a 3-1 defeat against Shooting Stars in Ibadan.
The contest in Port Harcourt was finely balanced at 3-2 before Iyowuna Douglas struck late to secure the win for Rivers, who representd Nigeria in this season’s CAF Champions League.
The result ensured they leapfrogged Rangers, who had their seven-game unbeaten run snapped by the Oluyole Warriors.
In Ibadan, Shooting Stars broke the deadlock after a goalless first half through Sodiq Ibrahim.
Rangers responded via Chidiebere Nwodo, but late goals from Desmond Ojietefiani and Adams Mustapha sealed a memorable victory for the hosts, moving them within five points of the leaders.
With Rivers United now on 55 points, Rangers on 54, and Ikorodu City close behind on 52, the title race remains wide open heading into the final stretch of the season.
