NSC may move May 31st AFN Elective Congress to Abuja to avoid rigging and intimidation

The National Sports Commission, NSC, may move the AFN Elective Congress scheduled to hold in Asaba, the Delta state capital to Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

Quoting a source close to the NSC, The Guardian reports that the sports governing body in Nigeria ‘is not comfortable with the arrangement by some individuals that are preparing to host their elective congress in their state.’

This is a response to the decision of the leadership of the AFN to hold the elective congress in Asaba, Delta state where the incumbent, Tonobok Ojuru Okowa, who is seeking re-election comes from.

‘This arrangement by some individuals scheming to host their federation elective congress in their states won’t produce clear winners and the NSC won’t go with it. The election might be held in Abuja.

‘Again, the NSC won’t accept the guideline that is being paraded by some federations. The NSC will come up with proper guidelines for all the sports federations to follow in conducting the coming election,’ the source reportedly told The Guardian.

Sportsnow.com.ng recalls how the 2014 Nigeria Football Federation Elective Congress was taken to Warri, also in Delta and how Mallam Shehu Dikko, the NSC Chairman, then an aspirant during the election was intimidated out of the race he was the clear and overwhelming candidate to win.
