Odegbami: Super Eagles Can Repeat 1980 Glory Against Morocco
Nigerian football legend Segun Odegbami has tipped the Super Eagles to overcome hosts Morocco in Wednesday’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final, insisting their dominant quarter-final display against Algeria was a throwback to Nigeria’s famous triumph of 1980.
Odegbami, a former AFCON winner and twice the tournament’s top scorer, said the Eagles’ performance reminded him of the day Nigeria stunned Algeria 3–0 in Lagos to win their first continental title.
‘The Super Eagles’ performance against Algeria was a masterclass. It was 1980 all over again,’ Odegbami wrote on his Social media page. ‘The Algerians barely touched our goal until the 80th minute. By then, the match was already over.’
Looking ahead to the clash with Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Odegbami acknowledged the challenge of facing the hosts and their 60,000-strong supporters, but insisted Nigeria’s momentum makes them formidable.
‘These Eagles are on fire, finding their rhythm, creating and scoring goals freely,’ he said. ‘The Moroccans must be anxious. With the form Nigeria showed, they are ready to do the impossible and soar over the Atlas Mountains.’
Nigeria, unbeaten in five matches at AFCON 2025, are chasing a historic sixth straight win and a place in the final, while Morocco seek their first title since 1976.
