Ofili drops out of Grand Slam Track opener in Kingston
Nigeria’s Favour Ofili is among a number of athletes who have been scratched from the opening leg of the money-spinning Grand Slam Track scheduled for this weekend at the National stadium in Kingsto, Jamaica.
The Paris 2024 Olympics 200m finalist was earlier confirmed as one of the Challengers that will compete in the short sprint over two days with a staggering cash prize of $100,000 for the winner of that category.
No reason has been given by the organisers of the event seen by many across the globe as the new global home of professional track competition.
‘We knew when we announced the fields more than three weeks ahead of the first Slam that there would be some changes.
‘While injuries and unexpected circumstances are out of our control, we’ve chosen to be transparent with fans… we have been able to fill the open lanes with such high-quality competitors who will contend for wins,’ said the event’s Senior Director of Racing Kyle Merber.
Ofili was the only Nigerian confirmed for the first leg of the competition and no Nigerian was named among the replacements.
Jamaican sprinter, Jodean Williams, 31 will replace the Nigerian in the short sprint while 2019 World champion, Nia Ali will replace Paris 2024 Olympics finalist, Grace Stark in the 100m hurdles.
