Ogazi secures first SEC weekly award after running 44.98 in 400m to win in Auburn

Paris 2024 400m finalist and University of Alabama Sophomore, Samuel Ogazi has been named the Men’s Southeastern Conference, SEC, Co-Runner of the Week for his facility-record-breaking performance at last week’s Tiger Track Classic at Auburn University in Alabama.

It was the Nigerian’s first weekly award of his sophomore campaign.

Competing at the Tiger Track Classic, the 18 year old captured the event title in his 400m season debut, clocking 44.98. He, in the process broke the facility (Hutsell-Rosen Track) record and is currently the fifth-fastest time in the USA.

Ogazi joined University of Alabama as a student-athlete in 2024 after emerging the best U18 athlete in Africa in the 200m and 400m events at the African U18 and U20 Championships in Ndola, Zambia in 2023.

He grew to become one of the top eight best at the Olymics last year and made history as the first Nigerian since 1988 to run in the final of the full lap event.
