Ogunleye seeks redemption, return to the top of the World list at Dusseldorf; Mihambo targets consolidation
Reigning Olympic Shot Put champion, Yemisi Ogunleye will be aiming for some redemption of sort and get her confidence back ahead of next month’s World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China when she takes to the Shot Put pit at the ISTAF indoor meeting in Dusseldorf, Germany on Sunday.
The Nigeria-born German queen of the Shot Put failed to sparkle in Karlsruhe, last week, finishing fourth in the World Athletics indoor tour gold meeting. She also dropped from second to fourth in the 2025 World top list less than a month after throwing herself to the top in Dortmund.
The 26-year-old is also in another German city and will hope to become the fourth woman this season to hit the 20m mark after Canada’s Sarah Mitton who set a north American record (20.68), Dutch woman, Jessica Shilder (20.09) and American Chase Jackson (20.06m).
Ogunleye will be looking forward to transition from silver to gold medal winner in Nanjing next month after coming second in Glasgow last year.
Also in Dusseldorf, World leader in the long jump, Malaika Mihambo will be keen to consolidate her hold on the top list after jumping 7.07m to win in Karlsruhe.
Mihambo is looking forward to become the second woman after USA’s Britney Resse to win the World Long Jump title indoors and out. She already has two gold medals outdoor and her best indoor was her fifth place finish in 2018.
