Okwose, Ogazi move closer to dream double at 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games
Sprinter, Faith Okwose and quartermiler, Samuel Ogazi moved closer to completing a 100/200m and 200/400m respectively when they both sped into the final of the 200m event at the ongoing Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.
Both are aiming to complete the double at the Games after achieving the feat last May at the African U18 championships.
Okwose who ran a new 11.26 Games record to win the 100m title ran 23.49 to win her semifinal heat. It was the fastest qualifying time in the two heats and the 17 year old Nigerian will be the strong favouite to win the half lap title.
She will be joined in the final by compatriot and 100m silver medalist, Justina Eyakpobeyan who ran 23.90 to place third in the second semifinal heat.
In the men’s race, Ogazi ran 21.30 to win his semifinal heat but it was his greatest threat, Dean Patterson of Scotland that was fastest (21.15) across the three semifinal heats.
Okon Israel Sunday will also be in the final after running 21.40 to place second behind Patterson in his semifinal heat.
The final of the event will hold on Thursday, the final day of the athletics event of the Games.
