Onuachu Arrives in Super Eagles Camp Determined to End AFCON Goal Drought
Paul Onuachu has arrived in the Super Eagles’ AFCON camp in Cairo with one clear ambition: to finally score his first Africa Cup of Nations goal after four editions.
The Trabzonspor striker, currently the top scorer in the Turkish Super League, has been recalled to Nigeria’s squad for the 35th AFCON in Morocco.
Now 31, Onuachu boasts an impressive club record of 196 goals in 409 appearances, yet his international return has been far less prolific. He has scored only three times for the Super Eagles, and none of those goals have come at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite featuring in the 2019, 2022 and 2024 tournaments, he has started just one of his seven AFCON matches.
His only start came in his debut appearance in June 2019, when he played 73 minutes in Nigeria’s 1–0 victory over Burundi at the Alexandria Stadium in Egypt. Since then, he has largely been restricted to cameo roles, coming off the bench in six matches across the next two editions.
With his club form at its peak and another AFCON opportunity ahead, Onuachu will be hoping this is finally the tournament where he makes a decisive impact for Nigeria.
