Onwuzurike and Godbless doubtful for World Athletics Championships!

The sprint duo of Udodi Onwuzurike and Tima Godbless looks to be out of the 19th World Athletics Championships scheduled to start in 12 days time in Budapest, Hungary, sources within the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, have informed Sportsnow.

Onwuzurike and Godbless, according to AFN sources, have failed to recover in time from the injuries they copped after the NCAA outdoor championships and the Nigerian championships respectively.

Onwuzurike, the former World U20 200m champion, Sportsnow gathered, aggravated the injury he copped at the NCAA finals when he ran for Nigeria in the men’s 4x100m relay event at the African region 2 championships in Lome, Togo last month.

The 20 year old who ran a 19.76 lifetime best over the half lap to move to number two in the Nigerian all-time list and number five in Africa is the fastest Nigerian in the 200m in four years.

Godbless injured her harmstrings during the Nigerian Championships in Benin city, Edo state early last month and the 19 year old has reportedly failed to recover in time to make her first World Athletics Championships.

The reported unavailability of the duo has brought to three the number of high flying Nigerian stars doubtful for the World Athletics’ flagship event.

Sprinter, Godson Oghenebrume was the first to pull out due to health reasons.

The 20 year old took to twitter in the early hours of Monday, August 7, 2023 to announce his withdrawal from the championships.

‘I want to thank everyone who supported me. This is a hard decision for me but with much consideration I’ve decided to focus on getting healthy for next year, with that being said I will not be competing at Budapest this august.

‘Lastly I will be coming back to the bayou next year,’ he wrote on his twitter page, @brume_godson.
