Onwuzurike Becomes Eighth Nigerian Athlete In World Athletics International Registered Testing Pool
NCAA outdoor track and field 200m champion, Udodi Onwuzurike has been added to the list of Nigerian athletes in World Athletics International Registered Testing Pool.
Athletes at the highest level of their sport are selected for what is known as a Testing Pool and Onwuzurike’s name was among the hundreds of athletes’ names published by the Athletics Integrity Unit, AIU, following its July 1, 2023 update.
The 20 year old who ran a new lifetime best of 19.76 on his way to becoming the third Nigerian to win the half lap gold in the championships is now one of the eight Nigerian athletes who are considered to be at the highest level of athletics.
Other Nigerians who are in the updated testing pool include reigning World and Commonwealth Games 100m hurdles champion and record holder, Tobi Amusan and two-time World Athletics Championships long jump medalist, Ese Brume.
Also on the updated list are Nigeria record holder in the 200m, Divine Oduduru, Shot Putter Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and another long jumper, Ruth Usoro.
Others are Nigeria’s 200m record holder indoors (22.11) and outdoor (21.96), Favour Ofili and 400m hurdles record holder, Ezekiel Nathaniel.
Missing is Enoch Adegoke, the 2021 Olympics 100m finalist whose has been removed following his poor run of form since last year.
The eight Nigerian athletes on the testing Pool are thus required to provide whereabouts information to the AIU and the information will be used by Anti-Doping Organisations (ADOs) to locate them for effective out of competition doping control.
The AIU will be primarily responsible for testing the eight Nigerians while the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, will have the responsibility of testing others who should be on its testing pool.
