Onyali: ‘We will make 2026 National Sports Festival a huge success’

Former Nigeria and African sprint star, Ambassador Mary Onyali has hailed Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Mba for including her in the 12-man Local Organising Committee for next year’s 23rd National Sports Festival.

In a letter of appreciation to the Governor posted on her Facebook Page, Onyali expressed gratitude for the great honour.

‘I write in appreciation of my appointment as a member of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2026 National Sports Festival. While expressing my gratitude to you for this appointment, I wish to state that I will give this project my very best and contribute my quota to its success,’ wrote the woman who dominated the Nigeria and African 100/200m scene like a colossus in the late 1980s and 1990s.

Onyali did not only assure the Governor of her total commitment but also promised she and other members of the Committee will deliver a hugely successful Festival.

‘I strongly believe that I and other members of the committee will make the 2026 National Sports Festival a huge success,’ she further wrote.

Onyali is one of notable track and field stars who made the list. Others are Victor Okorie, the 2003 national 400m hurdles champion and African Games silver medalist and Dr Henry Okorie, a two-time Nigeria 400m hurdles champion and twice African Games finalist.
