Osayi-Samuel: Osimhen Is ‘Phenomenal’ Despite Criticism

Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel has described teammate Victor Osimhen as a ‘phenomenal player,’ insisting that criticism of the Napoli striker does not diminish his importance to the national team.

Osimhen has been at the center of several controversies in recent years, the latest coming at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco when he clashed with Ademola Lookman during Nigeria’s 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the round of 16. The incident drew criticism from pundits, including former Nigeria captain Sunday Oliseh, who labeled it an act of indiscipline capable of disrupting team harmony.

Speaking to OmaSportsTV, Osayi-Samuel dismissed concerns about the team’s reliance on Osimhen, stressing his unique qualities.

‘It doesn’t really bother me. People need to understand that Victor [Osimhen] is one of the star players of our team, and we always want our star players to be present in games,’ the Birmingham City right-back said.

He added: ‘He is a phenomenal player. People will always have their opinions, whether he is playing or not.’

Osimhen scored four goals and provided two assists at the 2025 AFCON, earning a place in CAF’s Best XI for the tournament. Despite occasional controversies, his performances continue to underline his status as one of Africa’s most influential forwards.
