Oshoala scores first Bay FC playoff goal in history
Asisat Oshoala scored her eighth goal in the NWSL in her club, Bay FC’s 2-1 extra defeat against Washington Spirit in the quarterfinals of the 2024 NWSL Playoffs on Sunday afternoon at Audi Field, a soccer-specific stadium in the Buzzard Point neighborhood of Washington, D.C.
Oshola scored the game’s opening goal for Bay FC in 82 minutes but the lead lasted only four minutes with Tara McKeown’s long-range strike cancelling the Nigerian’s goal.
The Washington Spirit netted the second and final goal of the game in the first half of extra time to win the game
Oshoala’s goal was her club’s first playoff goal in history.
The Nigerian has netted eight goals in NWSL play, including the postseason, and seven of those goals have come in road games.
Oshoala has been able to inspire Bay FC to become just the second expansion team to qualify for the postseason in their inaugural campaign, joining San Diego Wave FC (2022).
Notably, Bay FC finished the regular season with 11 total wins, which also set a record for most wins in an expansion season, breaking the previous record set by San Diego.
As a team, Bay FC tallied 31 goals during the regular season – the second-most goals by an NWSL expansion team and finished with six road wins, also the most wins by an expansion team in their first season.
Oshoala tallied a team-high seven goals in the regular season– the second-most goals by a player in an expansion year.
