Osimhen needs 19 goals to match Higuain Serie A single season goal record

Victor Osimhen is on track to become the top scorer in the Serie A this term after the Nigerian scored for the 17th time in 18 games on Sunday in Napoli’s 2-0 defeat of strugglers Cremonese.

The 24 year old looks certain to break the 20 goal record for most goals scored by an African player in the Serie A in a season held by his compatriot Simy Nwankwo and the top scoring African record of 46 goals held by George Weah but matching or surpassing the single season goal record set by Argentina’s Gonzalo Higuain looks herculean.

Interestingly, the Nigerian’s goal against Cremonese which was his eighth in his last six consecutive league fixture matches the path Higuain took in the 2015/16 season to end up with 36 goals that season.

Higuain scored a hat-trick in the final game against Frosinone to reach the magical figure of 36 goals to beat the record Milan legend Gunnar Nordahl set in the 1949-50 campaign. when he scored 35 goals in the competition.

Only Lazio forward, Ciro Immobile has been able to equal the record with 36 goals in the 2019-20 season for Lazio and with 16 games left in the current campaign, Osimhen would need to score more than he has done in his first 18 games.

The Nigerian will need to score 19 times between now and may to match that record..or more to be the outright record holder.
