Osimhen Says He Deserves To Be Crowned 2023 African Player Of The Year
Nigerian is African top scorer in Europe in 2022/23 season

Napoli forward Victor Osimehn says he has done enough to be crowned 2023 African player of the year.
The Nigerian scored 31 goals in 39 games for Napoli to end the 2022/23 season as the top scoring African in Europe with Cameroon’s Jean Pierre Nsame of Young Boys (Switzerland) Egypt’s Mo Salah (Liverpool) joint second with 30 goals each.
The duo of Mbaye Diagne Karagumruk (Senegal) and Nigeria’s Terem Moffi (21 each) are joint third.
Osimhen’s 26 goals in the Serie A also crowned him the first African to top scored in a single Season in the Italian top flight.
The 24 year old also ended the season as African top scorer in a single Serie A season as well as the all-time top scorer in the competition.
“There is nothing else to do anymore. I think I got a great season, there are also other Africans that have done so well for themselves, for their clubs. For me, whosoever wins it, wins it but I think I’ve got a chance,’ the Napoli hitman told Complete Sports, Nigeria’s most authoritative daily sports paper.
According to the newspaper, he owes some of the feats he achieved in his third season in the Serie A to Napoli coach, Luciano Spalletti.
He told the Complete Sports: ‘Spalletti is a great man, he’s done so well, now he is a huge legend, one of the most respected now in the world, in Italian football, most importantly at Napoli.
‘He has done so well, shaped me into the kind of striker I am today and gave me a lot of confidence on and off the pitch. I will miss him for sure. I think he would be supporting us from wherever he is and I wish him all the best.’
