Paris 2024 Olympics: Boxer, Olare becomes third Nigerian to crash out at the first hurdle

Nigerian boxer, Olaore Olaitan Adam on Sunday morning lost in his bid to return Boxing as a medal winning event for Nigeria at the Olympics.

Olaore was beaten 5-0 by Kazakhstan’s Oralbay Aibek in the preliminary round with all five judges scoring the bout 10-9 against the Nigerian.

Boxing had been a veritable fishing ground for Nigeria at the Olympics with the sport producing the country’s first ever medal at the quadrennial games.

The sport continued to produce medals for the country in subsequent editions and up untill the centenial games in 1996 in Atlanta.

Since then, no Nigerian boxer has won any Olympic medal and light-heavyweight star, with the now suspended Cynthia Ogunsemilore, hoped to change the narrative but it seems Nigeria will have to wait for another four years to hope again.

Nigeria started her Paris 2024 Olympics campaign on a losing note with the Super Falcons losing 1-0 to Brazil on their return to the stage since 2008.

Table Tennis stars, Aruna Quadri and Olajide Omotayo followed suit, crashing out of the men’s singles event on Saturday.

That same Saturday, the International Testing Agency says it has suspended Ogunsemilore after the lightweight boxer tested positive for the diuretic furosemide in a sample taken on Thursday.

Olaore has now joined the rank of also rans at the Games.
