Paris 2024 Olympics: Third Nigeria Table Tennis star, Edem crashes out; Bello makes Olympic debut Monday
Edem Offiong lost 4-0 to Brazil’s Takahashi Bruna in their round of 64 clash at the South Paris Arena 4 on Sunday evening.
The Nigerian lost 11-8, 11-4, 13-11 and 12-10 to crash out of the women’s singles like the male duo of Olajide Omotayo and Aruna Quadri.
The 37 year old Edem has not been able to perform at world stage since she made her Olympics debut in 2012. She has won several African Games gold and has not won an African title since 2019 when she won the doubles title.
While the Nigerians are without a win so far in the competition, Egypt’s Meshref Dina outplayed her Spanish opponent, Xiao Maria 4-1 to qualify for the round of 32.
Nigeria’s only hope for a singles medal now rests on the shoulder of debutant, Fatimo Bello who will face home girl, Yuan Jia Nan on Monday at the South Paris Arena 4 at 9am.
