Perempboere Strikes Gold for Edo State in Swimming at 2nd Niger Delta Games
Delta’s Oddo Dominates High Jump Final, Etoro Bassey Powers into Tennis Final as Desire Bassey Wins Taekwondo Gold
Edo State celebrated a golden moment at the Niger Delta Games 2026 as Joy Perempboere stormed to victory in the Women’s 100m Freestyle Swimming event, clinching gold and adding to Team Edo’s growing medal tally. At the last count, Edo has won 17 gold medals to lead the medal table with Delta 12 gold and Bayelsa eight gold medals.
On the track, the Men’s High Jump final delivered thrilling drama. Delta State’s Melvin Oddo soared to a commanding 1.95m to secure gold, stamping his authority on the competition. Rivers State’s Bright Godson followed closely with a leap of 1.90m to claim silver, while Akwa Ibom’s Christian Edet rose to 1.85m to earn bronze.
In tennis, Akwa Ibom’s Etoro Bassey showcased her prowess with a commanding 2–0 victory (6–1, 6–1) over Lorelay Holzendorff, booking her place in the women’s singles final.
Meanwhile, Cross River State’s Desire Bassey delivered a dominant performance in Taekwondo, clinching gold in the Women’s +67kg category.
Beyond the sporting arena, the Niger Delta Games will also celebrate culture and entertainment.
The Niger Delta Cultural Expo is set for Wednesday, February 25th, at the iconic Cathelea Convention and Event Centre. The event promises electrifying performances from music star Harrysong, comedy heavyweights Okey Bakassi and Seyi Law, rap sensation Ikpa Udo, and many other acts.
It will be an evening of fun, fashion, laughter, music, and vibrant cultural expression.
