Premier League confirms Iwobi as Nigeria’s assists record holder

The official website of the English Premier League has confirmed Fulham midfielder, Alex Iwobi as the Nigerian with the most assists in the history of the competition.

Iwobi provided the assist for Fulham’s second goal in their 3-1 defeat of Newcastle United as Craven Cottage on Saturday and the Premier League website acknowledged it as the 28-year old’s 30th in 258 appearances in the competition.

This is contrary to Transfermarkt’s account as the assist being Iwobi’s 31st with former Arsenal and Portsmouth player, Nwankwo Kanu credited with 33 from 273 appearances.

The owner of the league has however revealed Kanu made just 29 assists during his time in the Premier League.

The Premier League website also affirmed Yakubu Aiyegbeni as Nigeria’s all-time top scorer in the competition with 95 goals while Kanu and Efan Ekoku are second and third with 54 and 52 goals respectively.

According to the website, Shola Amoebi has made the most number of appearances(298), Iwobi has played the most number of minutes (17,232 and still counting), Wilfred Ndidi has made the most number of tackles (710) and Mikel Obi has received the highest number of yellow cards (38).
