Real Madrid, PSG, Arsenal and Sporting Reach Champions League Quarterfinals

The first four quarterfinalists of the UEFA Champions League were confirmed on Tuesday night, with Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal and Sporting CP all progressing after a dramatic round of 16 second-leg action.

At the Etihad, Manchester City’s hopes of overturning a 3–0 first-leg deficit against Real Madrid were dashed as Vinícius Júnior struck twice to seal a 2–1 win on the night and a 5–1 aggregate triumph.

City captain Bernardo Silva was sent off midway through the first half for handling on the line, allowing Vinícius to convert from the spot.

Erling Haaland briefly gave Pep Guardiola’s side hope with a goal before half-time, but the Brazilian forward added a second in stoppage time to send Madrid through for the third consecutive season at City’s expense.

In London, Chelsea endured another chastening night as PSG ran out 3–0 winners at Stamford Bridge to complete an 8–2 aggregate victory.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring after just six minutes, Bradley Barcola doubled the lead with a superb strike, and substitute Senny Mayulu added a third to underline the French champions’ dominance.

PSG will now face either Liverpool or Galatasaray in the quarter-finals.

Arsenal produced a composed performance to see off Bayer Leverkusen 2–0 at the Emirates and secure a 3–1 aggregate success.

Eberechi Eze broke the deadlock with a thunderous strike shortly before half-time, and Declan Rice added a second midway through the second half to confirm the Gunners’ place in the last eight.

Mikel Arteta’s side will meet Sporting CP, who staged one of the most remarkable comebacks in Champions League history.

Sporting, trailing 3–0 from the first leg against Bodø/Glimt, roared back in Lisbon with a 5–0 win after extra time.

Gonçalo Inácio’s header sparked belief, Pedro Gonçalves and Luis Suárez added further goals to level the tie, before Maximiliano Araújo and Rafael Nel struck in extra time to complete a stunning turnaround. It is Sporting’s first quarter-final appearance since the 1982/83 European Cup.

With four places now filled, attention turns to Wednesday’s fixtures, where Barcelona host Newcastle, Bayern Munich face Atalanta, Liverpool take on Galatasaray, and Tottenham attempt to overturn a deficit against Atlético Madrid.
