Rivers Angels seal 10th crown, Kwara United make history in Federation Cup Finals
At a dramatic finale to the 2025 President Federation Cup held in Lagos, Rivers Angels successfully defended their title, claiming their tenth championship after a spirited comeback and penalty shootout win over arch-rivals Nasarawa Amazons.
Meanwhile, Kwara United etched their name in history, clinching their first-ever national trophy with a tense shootout victory against giant-killers Abakaliki FC.
The women’s final saw Shola Shobowale shine early for the Amazons, bagging a brace by the 20th minute to set up a commanding 2–0 halftime lead. But Rivers Angels, true to their championship pedigree, roared back in the second half.
Goals from Taiwo Ajibade and a quick equalizer leveled the score, forcing penalties. Goalkeeper Anderline Mgbechi, who later earned the Best Goalkeeper award, calmly converted the final kick as the Angels triumphed 4–2 in the shootout.
In the men’s showdown, Kwara United held their nerves against Abakaliki FC, who had stunned multiple heavyweights en route to the final. Despite near misses—including a first-half strike against the woodwork and a disallowed second-half goal—the Afonja Warriors prevailed 4–3 on penalties after a goalless 90 minutes, sparking jubilant scenes among their supporters.
