Rohr: Benin Did Not Deserve Defeat Against DR Congo
Cheetahs of Benin Republic coach Gernot Rohr says his side did not deserve to lose to the Democratic Republic of Congo after a spirited performance in their opening Group D clash at the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025.
‘We witnessed a very good football match that did not deserve to have a loser. My team made me proud. It was the first time we played with this system. We will now prepare well for the match against Botswana, with the advantage of having our suspended players back,’ Rohr reflected after the game.
Despite his optimism, Benin were undone by a single moment of defensive hesitation in the 16th minute, when Théo Bongonda pounced to slot calmly past goalkeeper Saturnin Allagbé. The early strike proved decisive, handing DR Congo a 1-0 victory at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat.
The Leopards, buoyed by their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup play-offs, looked sharp from the outset and continued to press after taking the lead. Cédric Bakambu forced Allagbé into a fine save in a one-on-one situation, while another effort was ruled out for offside as DR Congo threatened to extend their advantage.
Benin, missing five suspended regular starters, showed resilience and sought to respond through counter-attacks and set-pieces. However, they struggled to carve out clear opportunities against a disciplined Congolese defence that dealt comfortably with aerial deliveries and second balls.
The Cheetahs pushed forward in the closing stages, displaying determination and intent, but ultimately lacked the cutting edge to break through. DR Congo held firm to secure maximum points and a clean sheet, while Benin will now turn their focus to their next fixture against Botswana.
